Hyundai workers on strike in Chennai plant

Date: 08 Jun 2010

CHENNAI: Workers at the Hyundai Motor's manufacturing facility at Sriperumbudur went on a flash strike from Sunday midnight (June 6, 2010). The Hyundai Motor India Employees Union said that this was an indefinite strike. Last year the union had called for two strikes after the management failed to recognise the union. The Hyundai management termed the strike illegal and quoted an earlier court ruling barring the union from such "unlawful activities". Production at the plant has been suspended which would result in a daily production loss of around 2200 cars. The bone of contention between the management and the union is with regards to the management reinstating several dismissed employees. The company has sought the intervention of the State government to resolve the matter at the earliest.
